This blog is about my car, a Mercedes 280 SL from 1985. I am not a professional mechanic but have had some old cars through the years which had to be repaired from time to time. There is always small things that can be done on an old car like this one so I've created this blog so that other people can see what I'm doing (or what I shouldn't have done). Feel free to comment and please leave a little note that you've been here.

Uppgraded the car stereo.
Bought a new JVC car stereo to the car since I'm going to use it for daily driving soon, not very time typical but very practical and have a discretely look. It has bluetooth so I can connect my cellphone to it, stream music or take my calls from it (you can see the microphone near the tachometer). I will mostly use the usb port to play music from a usb memory instead of using those old CD disks which where always laying around everywhere.

Fixed illumination of Temperature wheels and Fan-knobs
Fixed the "shiftstick" illumiation
Replaced the auto trans. "shift stick" illumination bulb, had a really hard time finding one . Visited almost every car-part vendor but none to be found.
Try Mercedes you think and that's what I did... They had one single bulb and couldn't get any more??? Fortunately I got one at least but since no more the be easily found around here I build one as spare using the old bulb and a high intense LED which is seen in the picture.

Fixing the MB-Tex back piece
I have finally started to repair the back piece. It's not so worn as the seat so there are less to sew.
I have also ordered new "flat head screws" which attaches the back part to the hinges. It looks like they are made out of brass or other soft metal, probably to avoid them from snap of in case of an impact.

This is how it looked like, not so worn but need some stitches. |

Drivers seat is now finished.
The seat really looks and feels great, definitely an improvement.
Had to reinforce the old clothing by sewing some new blue cloth on the sides, made it much easier since the "hog rings" now have something to grip on.
Time for the back piece...

MB Tex seat repaired
The entire bottom of the MB-Tex cover was torn so I glued on a new piece
of cloth to protect it from the Horshair-pad. Now I had to sew each
stitch to keep the padding and ribbons stay in place...Took a couple of hours but at least the seat is finished now. Only waiting for the "hog-rings" I ordered so I can attatch the seat cover to the seats backbone. As soon as the seat is finished I will start with the back.
The seat to the left and it was more worn than the back piece to the right. |
Started to sew using two needles, one fom each side.. Gives strong stitches ,same as from a sewing machine |
Time consuming but easy since I use the old holes... |
The middle stitches finished... |
Finish, sparyed some glue over the stitches to fixate them. |
All ribbons in place. |

I have now dissabled the drivers seat, not much to say since a picture says more then 100 words. At least it gives you a hint of wats waiting you if you try it yourself.
I started with stiffening up the seat springs by using a plasted wire and it works very well.
Still it's quite soft at he front of the seat so I've used a pice from a "Foam Mat", the "Foam Mat roll" are kept in place by a wire so it stays where it should. small things but they really makes a difference.
